In December 2001 Erik Jonsun joined the US Army at age 33.
Not believing in the mythology of 911 -- only believing we were going war, and not wanting to watch it on TV -- he joined the Infantry and wound up with the 1st of the 9th Cav out of Ft. Hood, Texas. (The historic Airmobile unit from Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now.) After a failed attempt to join Special Forces and an invitation to return another day, he decided to join a small 1/9 Cav company headed for Iraq six months ahead of the main Division.
The Seeded Planet was formed in the wake of the experience. The Iraq tour lasted seven months. As part of a quick reaction force sent to assist a small convoy of Marines under attack, 'Johnny' caught RPG frags in the throat, wrist, shoulder and hip and went down hard. After surgery in a Navy trauma tent somewhere in the desert, 2 medevac choppers and a C151 airlift full of wounded to Germany, he was suddenly back in Texas on medical hold with prescriptions for 5 different anti-seizure medications and painkillers, short-term memory loss, no friends, and no mission.
His hopes for a career as a Special Forces medic were squashed flat. He received an Honorable Discharge and a cardboard box with some medals inside and packed a truck and trailer and drove north to New York in 2005. He was by then almost 37, with no job and no desire to return to the offices and dungeons of corporate New York City, but that he did.
Within a year, The Seeded Planet had been given a name. Within 18 months the Smoking Mirror EP was released.
The Seeded Planet is evolving. There is no label writing the checks. We figure it out as we go. Like a mountain crossing in the snow. Thank you for listening.
