A butterfly swarm large enough to show up on weather radar recently passed over the Denver area, reports the BBC.
When meteorologists fist noticed the roughly 70-mile wide moving mass, they assumed it was comprised of an entirely different sort of flying creature.
“Look at what's flying into Denver! Radar from last hour showing what we believe to be birds," the National Weather Service Boulder noted on Twitter Tuesday. "Any bird experts know what kind?”
It was quickly revealed that no birds were involved.
Multiple people reported sightings of massive quantities of Painted Lady butterflies, some flying overhead and others taking a moment to rest, according to USA Today.
The National Weather Service Boulder explained why butterflies hadn’t been their first guess, noting, “insects rarely produce such a coherent radar signature. Migrating birds do all the time."
