A pump station is designed to assist in drainage solutions, managing the transfer of waste water from a property to a sewage treatment works in the locality.

They are invaluable where the lie of the land means gravity alone cannot conduct the run-off of the waste water to main drain system and onto the sewage treatment plant. The law changed recently as regards ownership of private pumping stations. Previously, ownership of a pump station rest with the land owner. Now, responsibility and its cost for maintenance commonly belongs to local sewerage companies.

However, the pump station in question must serve more than one property. If your pump station only serves your own property, you remain responsible for its running costs. If it’s impossible to reassign ownership to your local sewerage company, approach a company experienced in managing pump stations. They can advise a package that’ll take the worry out of the daily running of the facility.

Remember, you as the owner of a pump station are entirely responsible for its running costs unless adopted by another party. Keep it in good working order to ensure it serves your property in terms of removal of sewage and/ or run-off water.
