In the wake of White House press secretary Sean Spicer’s resignation from the position, a colorful story has emerged alleging that he had once staged a night-time heist of a mini-fridge from junior staffers.
According to a recent Wall Street Journal report, early on in the job, Spicer was on the lookout for a mini-fridge so “he dispatched a top aide to a nearby executive office building where junior research employees are crammed into a room, surviving on Lean Cuisine frozen lunches. Mr. Spicer wants your icebox, the aide said, according to people familiar with the incident. They refused to give it up.”
The piece continues, “So Mr. Spicer waited until sundown—after his young staffers had left—to take matters into his own hands. He was spotted by a fellow White House official lugging the icebox down the White House driveway after 8 p.m.”
There were reportedly new mini-fridges being sold for around $60 in the local area, reports Newsweek.
The incident is one of numerous ups and downs Spicer had during his six-month tenure as press secretary.
The New York Times reports, citing inside sources, that President Trump wanted him to stay on, but he refused, in large part, because he didn’t want to report to Anthony Scaramucci, the president’s choice for communications director.
After Spicer resigned, he appeared on Fox News and said, “I just thought it was in the best interest of our communications department, of our press organization, to not have too many cooks in the kitchen.”
He added, “[The president] wanted to bring some new folks in to help rev up the communications operation, and after reflection, my decision was to recommend to the president that I give Anthony and Sarah a clean slate to start from.”
Sarah Huckabee Sanders was recently officially named as Spicer’s replacement.
Despite the criticisms Spicer faced during his time as press secretary, the president had some encouraging words for him; Friday evening Trump tweeted, “Sean Spicer is a wonderful person who took tremendous abuse from the Fake News Media - but his future is bright!”
