Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke recently announced that President Trump’s $78,333 salary donation will be used in the restoration of an important Civil War battlefield.

President Trump pledged to forgo his salary back to the federal government, and he made good on his promise in April by donating a $78,333 check to the National Park Service.
Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke recently announced that the money will be used in the restoration of an important Civil War battlefield in Maryland, reports the Washington Times.
Zinke said on Wednesday, “As both the secretary of the interior and a military veteran, I'm deeply honored and humbled to deliver the donation to Antietam National Battlefield on behalf of President Trump. Visiting the hallowed ground the day after Independence Day is incredibly moving and it underscores the importance of why we must preserve these historic grounds.”
Trump’s donation, along with money pledged by private donors, will be used to repair the battlefield’s Newcomer House and a 5,000-foot stretch of fencing.
The Washington Examiner notes that "the Battle of Antietam was fought near Sharpsburg, Md., on Sept. 17, 1862. The battle halted the Confederacy's first advance into the North and was the bloodiest single-day battle of the war, with 23,000 soldiers killed."
Back in April, when White House press secretary Sean Spicer announced Trump's decision to donate his salary, Spicer noted, "The Park Service has cared for our parks since 1916, and the President is personally proud to contribute the first quarter of his salary to the important mission of the Park Service, which is preserving our country's national security."
