Walrus
Walruses adrift
Climate change is depriving walruses of the fragments of pack ice that they live on, threatening them with ‘shipwreck’ and food shortages.
Walruses are large marine mammals with flippers that live in certain regions of the Arctic Ocean. Their way of life requires a layer of very thick ice to support the weight of the groups of individuals (which weigh on average one ton), and shallow waters enabling them to reach their favourite shellfish. Unfortunately, global warming is modifying their environment and with higher temperatures, the fragments of pack ice melt are becoming thinner and shrinking. The smaller patches of ice drift away from the shallow waters and as walruses are not good swimmers, they are deprived of an important amount of their food.
