Is there a better way than the high pressure, stressful lives many of us find ourselves living these days? Can you build businesses to make your ideas a reality without them taking over your life? Can you do something good to benefit your community while making some money in the process? Can you make money from something you love?
Well I'm about to find out, the hard way! I've just quit a very stressful, high pressure job as a software development team leader in the hope of a better life making some of my ideas a reality. I've got a negative bank balance and lots of people that rely on me, but even my Doctor is telling me I need a change. I need a complete lifestyle 180 and I'm gonna make it happen. If it works it could change a lot of people's lives for the better but at the end of the day, if it all goes horribly wrong, it'll make for some good TV!
Anyway, this documentary isn't about me. It's about trying to prove a point, that you can make a living doing what you love. Starting a business can be risky, but that risk can be mitigated by approaching the problem more scientifically, by not putting all your eggs in one basket and by sharing the work, the risks and also the rewards. Just because you want something to exist doesn't mean you have to devote your life to it. Can companies be structured for success in a way that mathematically encourages it? Can a more evolutionary, democratic and open company achieve things that profit centred companies cannot?
If this project reaches it's funding goal you can watch me explore all these ideas and more while I experiment by starting several innovative companies completely in the open. Learn from my mistakes and realise there are many different ways to make your ideas a reality, which don't involve killing yourself in the process.
Who knows if I'll make it, but if I do it'll prove that no one should be trapped in a stressful job and each one of us has the power to change their situation by dreaming big and working to make those dreams a reality.
