Contraceptiive Pill Increases Risk For Depression

A new study conducted at the University of Copenhagen found taking hormonal birth control could be associated with a higher risk for depression. The medical records of 1 million Danish women between the ages of 15 and 24 were analyzed by researchers over 14 years. 55 percent of the women in the study "were current or recent users of hormonal contraception." Researchers found that women using t a mix of estrogen and progestin were 23 percent more likely to be prescribed anti-depressants. Women on progestin-only pills were 34 percent more likely. The study also determined that the risk of depression was higher among teenage girls.
