China doesn’t generally comment on elections going on in other countries, but it recently broke that tradition by offering a critique of one of Donald Trump’s campaign promises, reports Reuters.
Trump has reportedly said that, if elected, one of his official acts will be backing out of the Paris Agreement, a global pact on climate change.
The accord, which includes a coordinated plan to significantly diminish the emissions of greenhouse gasses by 2025, is scheduled to go into effect on Friday, notes the Wall Street Journal.
In response to Trump’s pledge to not honor the commitment made by the U.S., Xie Zhenhua, China’s leading climate negotiator, said on Tuesday, “If they resist this trend, I don't think they'll win the support of their people, and their country's economic and social progress will also be affected. I believe a wise political leader should take policy stances that conform with global trends."
