Ontario Church’s White Baby Jesus Statue Gets Unusual Clay Head

A church in Ontario, Canada, is attracting attention because its white baby Jesus statue, which is believed to have been vandalized, was given an unusual replacement head made out of clay.

Some religious sculptures are famous for their grand presence, but there’s one in Canada which is getting attention for a different reason.

A church in Ontario has a white stone statue of Mary with the baby Jesus, but the child’s head, which had gone missing, has been replaced with an unusual reddish-orange terracotta version.

CBC quotes the priest as saying, “It really is shocking to the eyes because of the big contrast in colour.”

A new head was added because the previous one had been removed sometime last October, as it had been before due to vandalism, but, this time, the part was unable to be found.

The priest says that local businesses were not interested in constructing a custom replacement, but one day, artist Heather Wise offered to take on the challenge.

While the outcome has reportedly been criticized online, it is only intended to be a temporary placeholder until she can make a permanent stone version; this work is expected to begin in the spring.

The clay head may be removed in the meantime, as it is showing signs of wear due to the elements.
