Chipotle Sued By Nearly 10,000 Employees For Alleged Wage Theft

According to a lawsuit filed against Chipotle, the plaintiffs – at latest count 9,961 past and present employees - were not paid for a number of the hours they worked.

Chipotle often promotes itself as a healthier place to eat and a better place to work, but nearly 10,000 employees, both past and present, would likely beg to differ on the latter claim.

According to a lawsuit filed against the fast casual chain, the plaintiffs – at latest count all 9,961 of them - were not paid for a number of the hours they worked.

It is alleged that they were told to clock out and then continue working, typically at closing time and until the restaurant was cleaned and set up for the next day.

The suit states the purpose of the practice, which is known as wage theft, was, “…so that the restaurant could meet its budget goals.”

The attorney for the workers told CNN Money, “Chipotle has argued this is a few rogue managers who aren't following policy. Our view, especially given the number of people opting in, is that it's a systematic problem at Chipotle."

In regards to the legal action, Chipotle’s communications director said to Fortune, “A lawsuit is nothing more than allegations and is proof of nothing.”
