Rectifying age old coal grades, the government now ensures that coal will be properly graded and hence properly priced.
For overall better utilisation of coal, the Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (UDAY) provides for a scenario of reduced imports, better quality of coal, larger supply of domestic coal, better utilisation by swapping coal, installing more washeries and crusheries for coal.
Shri Goyal also mentions how the Modi government has plugged huge amount of wastage by rationalisation of coal linkages. Before 2014, the scale of wastage due to negligence of providing practical coal linkages can be seen from the example the Minister gives: Gujarat's power plant getting coal all the way from Korba, while Korba plant shipping coal from Gujarat's port.
All the steps taken towards efficient coal usage, along with the surge in coal production, has brought India to a situation of coal surplus.
