Strollers are designed to be safe, but a new study has found that they are involved in the harm of more than 17,000 kids each year on average.

The paper analyzed data from nearly 361,000 cases where children five years and younger were treated in an emergency room between 1990 and 2010 due to “an injury associated with a stroller or carrier.”

Researchers found that the patients were most often boys under the age of one.

And the problems were often caused when kids fell from the apparatus or when it tipped over.

As such, for both strollers and carriers, the areas most commonly harmed during these incidents were the head and face, and the most prevalent diagnoses were soft-tissue injuries and traumatic brain injuries or concussions.

Despite overall injuries declining during the two decades that were assessed, the team believes more needs to be done to ensure kids’ safety.

U.S. officials have told CNN that new safety standards have been put in place to address many of the problems presented in the study.
