Egyptian Female TV Anchors Deemed Overweight Suspended

The state-run Egyptian Radio and Television Union has suspended eight female TV anchors for a month, ordering them to lose weight and achieve an “appropriate appearance” during this time.

A controversial move in Egypt has sparked a debate over the importance of appearance versus performance in the workplace.
Eight female television anchors in the country have been temporarily suspended from their jobs because of being overweight.
The Independent cites local sources which are reporting that the women have been given a month off by the state-run Egyptian Radio and Television Union to slim down and achieve an “appropriate appearance.”
It is believed that none of their male counterparts have yet to be given the same mandate, notes the Gulf News.
According to the BBC, women’s rights groups have urged the union to reverse its decision; however, the union stands by the suspension and points out that the affected journalists will still receive their pay and benefits.
