A 111-year-old mansion built on top of a rocky outcrop in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, continues to fascinate locals and visitors alike.
Known as Clingstone, the 10,000-square-foot house was built in 1905 by Joseph Lovering Wharton.
The house was used regularly by the family until 1941 when Wharton’s wife died, notes Atlas Obscura.
It sat largely vacant for 20 years until Henry Wood and his ex-wife Joan, both architects, purchased the property for $3,600 in 1961, according to the New York Times.
Despite the house being designed and built to survive the elements, it was in bad shape when they bought it; most of the roof was missing, the floors had deteriorated, and all the windows were broken.
Over time, the family repaired the structure which son Josh has said is “totally off the grid.”
Its environmentally friendly features include a rainwater collection system, a wind turbine, and solar panels.
Wood, who is retired and still owns the property, maintains the house with the help of his three sons and volunteers.
