London, 1884. Surgeon Frederick Treves encounters a completely disfigured and deformed man who’s become a circus attraction. John Merrick, “the monster”, owes his name “The Elephant Man” to the horrible accident endured by his mother. While only a few months pregnant, she was run over by an elephant. Amazed by such deformities, Dr. Treves buys Merrick, thus freeing him from his owner’s cruelty and the daily humiliation of being put on show. The surgeon believes “the monster” is a congenital idiot. He quickly discovers a scarred man inside Merrick, intelligent and endowed with remarkable sensitivity.
