Gene mutations have distinct effects that ultimately act in aggregate to produce symptoms associated with the autistic spectrum, according to research based out of the University of Montreal. 
Dr. Sébastien Jacquemont, a geneticist and professor at the university, noted, "We now understand that each gene mutation has a specific effect, which adds to other effects to draw a unique picture of the disease in each patient.
