US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice On Oct. 6 she visited the President of Kurdistan, Massoud Barzani - less than two weeks after his regional government (KRG) threatened to break away from Iraq in a dispute over oil revenue - and urged him to share the region's petroleum wealth.
In a joint news conference after their meeting, Barzani said Kurdistan, "like any other nation, has the right to self-determination". But he said he was committed to a "federal, democratic and pluralistic Iraq". When he was asked about the future distribution of oil wealth, Barzani did not repeat his recent assertions that the KRG alone should control new contracts and business arrangements for crude oil produced in the Kurdish region. Ms Rice said Iraq's petroleum wealth should be shared fairly among all the Iraqis.
