A stunning blue ctenophore was recently spotted by the NOAA Okeanos Explorer crew at the southern end of the Kona Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii.

Also known as a comb jelly, this animal moves across the depths of the oceans through the use of cilia.

Its cilia are arranged in eight rows of what are called comb plates.

These plates give off the mesmerizing appearance of rippling and sparkling as the ctenophore moves about underwater.
