Bolivia’s El Alto International Airport near La Paz sits at a very high altitude,and to combat height-related ill effects Pope Francis drank a tea containing coca leaves.

Bolivia’s La Paz airport sits at a higher altitude than any international flight facility in the world.
To combat height-related ill effects while visiting a number of South American cities, Pope Francis drank a tea containing coca leaves. 

The leaves are the main ingredient in cocaine, but in their natural state are considered both sacred and medicinally advantageous by many in Bolivia.

Among the conditions they treat is altitude sickness.
