The orchestra is led by Alexis Lozano who plays several musical instruments among which are the low and trombone. The group was born in Bogota . Lozano was born in Quibdo , Choco , a coastal region of the Pacific of Colombia with a large Afro-Colombian population. He moved to Bogota and there, in conjunction with Jairo Varela and other Colombian musicians cofounded the Niche group , with which Lozano recorded four albums: Al pasito (1979), Will is power (1981), prepared Grupo Niche , vol. 2 (1982) and Niche (1983).

The February 16, 2011, Mamian Jairo Ruiz, one of the first singers of the Orquesta Guayacán died in Veracruz, Mexico. They found him hanging lifeless at his home. He was known for the interpretation of issues such as "Winter Spring", "Love and drabs", "Every day that passes," among others.
