28 Years Without Ismael Rivera.
His voice still resounds in every corner of the country. His musical cry that "Ecuajey" continues to cause, bewitching. Ismael Rivera, "the Mayor Sonero" managed to draw him sing so that a people with their joys and sorrows. He gave voice to the poor people, black people, the beautiful people, trespassing generations and borders. With a single, able to feel every word interpretative power, Ismael Rivera was kept alive in the memory of a people that today, 25 years after his death, do not forget and still singing and dancing with their songs.
Biography
Ismael Rivera was born on October 5, 1931 in San Mateo Crab in Santurce, fruit of the marriage of Margarita Rivera (Mrs. Margo) and Luis Rivera Esquilín, who later divorced. He grew quiet street in Villa Palmeras and served as a shoeshine and a bricklayer. From childhood he showed a passion for music, which was fueled when he met as a teenager to his friend and musical accomplice Rafael Cortijo. In 1954 he debuted as a singer Pan American Orchestra, conducted by maestro Lito Peña, becoming successes subjects like Chacha in blue and Bummer. In 1955 he joined as a singer Combo Rafael Cortijo, popularizing songs like The bonbon Elena, The black bembón and with the toe, among many other songs. In 1962, Maelo was arrested and charged with drug possession and served four years in prison. Upon his release, he rejoined the music, creating in New York his band The Cachimbos. His success led him to travel the world with his music, standing in countries such as Venezuela, Colombia and Panama, where devotee of the Black Christ of Portobelo became.
The May 13, 1987 the death surprised Maelo, at 56 years old, in the house of his mother in the street Calma his Santurce neighborhood where he was born. The whole world mourned his death.
Burial
Ismael Rivera's funeral was one of the busiest in the history of Puerto Rico.
"They say the greatest was that of (the governor) Luis Munoz Marin and the Maelo surpassed him," said Ivelisse Rivera Maelo sister.
When he died "the Sonero Mayor", the May 13, 1987, the then governor of Puerto Rico, Rafael Hernandez Colon, he declared three days of mourning. The singer's body was one days exposed at the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture (ICP) and then went to the community center residential Luis Llorens Torres. Artists like the composer Tite Curet Alonso, singers Celia Cruz, Ruben Blades, Andy Montañez, among many others, were present. It was a village funeral attended by thousands of people. The music did not miss: bomba and plena was played over the three days. Although there were hearse, it was never used because the people insisted on carrying the coffin, which was embraced by a flag of Puerto Rico.
Ivelisse Rivera recalled that the funeral is out of hand and the family what had happened told Ismael Rivera.
"He had said, 'No you will bury me, bury me my people." And so it was, "he recalled.
Ismaelito Rivera, son of Sonero Mayor, meanwhile, reported that countries such as Panama and Venezuela also dressed in mourning. He said that 25 years ago the neighborhood Bulb in Venezuela commemorates the date of the death of his father. He stressed that takes 16 years to participate this activity and this year is no exception.
"I think the best way to remember my father is making music and hearing it," he said.
