G7 shows no let up on Russia sanctions

On the second and final day of the G7 summit in Germany, world leaders took time out for their now traditional “family photo.”

Missing from the line up was Russian president Vladimir Putin, who has been excluded since Russia annexed the Crimean region of Ukraine last year.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference on Monday (June 8), US President Barack Obama said sanctions against Russia would continue until the conflict is resolved.

“As we have seen again in recent days, Russian forces continue to operate in Eastern Ukraine, violating Ukraine’s sovereign and territorial integrity. The G7 is making it clear that if necessary we stand ready to impose additional significant sanctions against Russia.”

Also high on the agenda was the topic of global warming.

Leaders are aiming for a common position on the issue ahead of a climate change summit in Paris later this year.
