Government Corruption Scandals Rock Panama, Guatemala and Honduras

Citizens across Central America are demanding the investigation and punishment of top current and former governmental authorities for corruption. Former Panamanian officials face corruption probes, while un Guatemala, protesters continue to demand the resignation of President Otto Perez, who is accused of a multi-million dollar embezzlement of public funds from various government institutions. A month ago Vice president Roxana Baldetti presented her resignation in the midst of a scandal. In Honduras, the government of Juan Hernández is accused of embezzling US$350 million from the Social Security Institute during the Presidency of Porfirio Lobo. Many of the funds are presumed to have been used in Hernandez’s campaign. The end of corruption is the major demand of protesters throughout the region.
