Efforts are now underway by the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia to clear the countryside of landmines continue. The mission is the first step in the March 2015 agreement adopted as part of the ongoing peace negotiations taking place in Havana.Since the early 1990s more than 2,000 Colombians have been killed and 9,000 injured by landmines and the country is second only to Afghanistan in the number of such casualties. Meanwhile, FARC chief peace negotiator Ivan Marquez warned in Havana that there is a smear campaign being waged against President Juan Manuel Santos aimed at weakening the peace process.
