Conquering Fears That Block Success: Fear of Failure

Nearly everybody will tell you that they’ve experienced fear of failure. Fear of failure is out there because failure is out there itself, but get over the fear. Here’s the deal. If you’re going somewhere, if you’re learning new things, if you’re experimenting with new things, if you’re in the battle to take your skills and your message to a new level, if you’re working to really say something new, you’re going to fail at different steps.

Failing is proof that you’re trying something new. The best gauge of you being at the cutting edge of your craft is that you’re pushing past what’s given knowledge, what’s accepted, what’s the conventional way that things are done, and you’re exploring beyond where other people dared go. That means you’re going to have a steady diet of some kind of failure mixed with amazing breakthroughs in success.

But nothing new is created without prototypes. Prototypes, if it’s an invention, prototypes are a series of failed efforts. Each one builds for more success for the next one.

It’s like, how do you learn to create something? You ramp it up with the knowledge you have as best as it is, and you find out what fails, what doesn’t do what you were expecting or wanting. You correct that, and you maybe innovate something new that you hadn’t even though of because you think about it, and your creativity kicks in and you see yet another whole way to go.

That process is so endemic to people who are at the edge, that they welcome the failures. They do things to expect and eliminate causes of failure. Engineers do this all the time, but even in your creative work, even in dance, even in music, you experiment at the edge and you go, that one didn’t do it. I got somewhere new. I never thought that I could do that.

So, whether your work is creative work or innovative work in science or in business, or in your particular entrepreneurial effort, sure you have to mitigate your risk and not be crazy with the risks of investing money that you, you know, on the com, but I’ve never known an entrepreneur that wasn’t at the edge of monetary failure at some point in the process that led to the breakthrough.

So, be willing to overcome the fear of failure because if you avoid fear of failure, you need to get used to failure and now. You need to get used to failure enough because you’re out at the edge that you don’t any longer fear it. You see it as a part of the processes, how you move forward.

There’s no better way that I know to conquer fear of failure than to put yourself at the edge of failure because you’re trying something new. That’s what you’re learning. To learn to speak a foreign language is to make mistakes until you smooth out what you’re doing.
