Honduras: Social Security Funds Funneled to Ruling National Party

The Attorney General’s Office of Honduras acknowledged on Thursday that there is evidence of a political party receiving checks for over US$100 million dollars from the Honduran Social Security Institute. This only came about after local news media presented photocopies of several checks for that sum sent to the ruling National Party. Authorities had previously denied the allegations. The announcement signals the re-opening of an investigation of the embezzlement of more than US$350 million from the workers’ health system in 2012-2013 during the administration of former president Porfirio Lobo Soso. The opposition is demanding a more thorough investigation. Gerardo Torres reports from Central America for teleSUR.
