South Korean soldiers on the border shot and killed a man believed to be illegally crossing into North Korea.

Officials at South Korea's Defense Ministry told Associated Press that the man, identified as Nam Young-ho, ignored warnings to return to the South after guards caught him trying to scale a border fence. After he was told to go back, he found a section of the Imjin River, which runs along the border.

The incident occurred near the western portion of the border in Paju, north of Seoul.

Mr. Young-ho, South Korean, was deported from Japan in June although it is unclear why.

His body was found attached to two buoys and he was carrying cookies.

North Korean officials made no comment of the shooting at the time of this report.

The Korean Peninsula is technically in a state of war following the Korean War.
