DASH CAM: Michigan State Trooper and suspect fall off overpass

A 41-year-old man from Standish, Michigan sent both Saginaw Township Police and Michigan State Police on car chase before jumping off an overpass, taking a state trooper with him.

The suspect had been on tether for an alcohol-related offense in Bay County when Michigan State Police attempted to stop him for driving with defective equipment on November 1. The suspect, who was driving on I-675 near Kochville Road, gave chase.

The state police pursued the suspect along the highway. An officer from Saginaw Township Police who was nearby put down stop sticks on the overpass the suspect was approaching. The suspect drove over them and when the front tire on the passenger side of his grey minivan burst, he stopped, then fled on foot.

A state police trooper was right on his heels and with nowhere to escape, the suspect climbed the railing of the overpass and jumped off. The trooper was close enough to grab him, but was pulled down by the momentum of the falling man.

The men fell between 25 and 35 feet to a grassy area below. Both survived the fall, but were injured. The state trooper was released from the hospital last week and recovering from a back injury at home on paid leave. Information about the suspect's injuries are not available. The suspect was not charged with taking the police on a car chase, but is in jail for violation of his parole.

The dash camera video of the event which is widely available on the Internet was taken by the Saginaw Township Police.
