How Pennsylvania state trooper ambush suspect Eric Frein was identified by police

A search is underway for the man who killed a Pennsylvania state trooper and wounded a second in an ambush attack outside a state police barracks late Friday.

Police have identified the suspect as 31-year-old Eric Matthew Frein of Canadensis, Pennsylvania.

Frein is a survivalist who took part in Cold War and East European military enactments, said George Bivens, deputy commissioner of operations for the State Police, in a press conference on Wednesday outside the Blooming Grove barracks where the shootings occurred.

“In his current frame of mind, Frein now appears to have assumed that role in real life,” Bivens said.

“Based on our investigation, it is clear to us that Eric Frein has a longstanding grudge with law enforcement and government in general since 2006,” he said.

Frein was identified after his Jeep Cherokee was found in a pond the woods three days after the shooting, two miles from the barracks, by a man walking his dog.

Inside the vehicle, police found two spent .308 cartridges, camouflage face paint, a black hoodie, two rifle cases and information about foreign embassies.

Frein is believed to be carrying an AK-47 and a .308 caliber rifle.

According to Frein’s father, a retired U.S. Army major who taught his son how to fire a rifle, Frein “doesn’t miss.”
