Earl and Mary Myatt met when they were 17 and were married for 42 years.

But after Mary suffered a brain aneurysm in January, she lost the ability to care for herself.

On the afternoon of Sunday, April 27, Mr Myatt drove with his wife to a railway line near Verona in New York State.

Earl Myatt then called his son Brad and simply said, "I love you and I'm sorry."

Mary Myatt also spoke briefly with Brad, but he says she struggled to understand the conversation.

Railway officials say they have CCTV footage showing the couple ignoring a warning horn and waiting purposefully by the tracks.

The couple then stepped directly into the path of a freight train. Mr and Mrs Myatt were both 59 years old.

The couple's son Brad Myatt said Mary was his father's whole world and he couldn't bear to watch her deteriorate. Brad also told reporters he has called the freight train driver to apologize for what happened.
