Guatemalan drug trafficker hides cocaine in cookies, caught by U.S. Customs at Newark airport

A Guatemalan man was detained earlier this month at a New York area airport after authorities found three pounds of cocaine hidden in cookies in his baggage.
Mauricio Isidro Rivera Hernandez arrived at Newark Liberty International Airport from Guatemala on June 5. After exiting the plane he was stopped by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and taken to a private room.
Officers found cookies in his three check-in bags. Inside the cookies were 118 small oval-shaped pellets of cocaine.
U.S. Customs representative Anthony Bucci told the New Jersey Star-Ledger that the pellets contained about 3 pounds of cocaine and had an estimated street value of $52,000.
The Star-Ledger reports that earlier this month a Connecticut man was arrested while attempting to smuggle 5 pounds of cocaine from Guyana to JFK airport in the handle rails of his luggage. Last month a man also flying in from Guyana was caught with 18 pounds of cocaine in a custard mix, and in April a man flying from Trinidad to JFK hid 7 pounds of cocaine in frozen meats.
