Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has vowed retribution for the deaths of two policemen killed trying to defuse bombs planted by militant group Soldiers of Egypt.

"Today, we lost new martyrs. I pledge before God and their families, the state will get just and speedy retribution," Sisi said in a speech. It was not known whether the president, who ousted Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood almost a year ago, was in the palace at the time of the attack.
Three bombs were planted about 20 metres away from the presidential palace in Cairo. According to AFP, the first bomb went off as several policemen were trying to defuse it.

The area was cordoned off shortly after the first blast. However, another explosive detonated while another group of policemen were attempting to defuse a second bomb.

Authorities used a disposal robot to move and safely defuse the third bomb.

The explosions killed two policemen and wounded 10 others.
The attack exposes the Egyptian forces' vulnerabilities, as militants were able to strike the presidential palace despite heavy security.

"Soldiers of Egypt", who claimed responsibility for the attack, last week gave out warnings that they had planted explosives near the palace and urged civilians to avoid the area.
