Indian boy Ashik Gavai has 232 teeth removed in JJ Hospital, Mumbai

A 17-year-old Indian boy had 232 teeth surgically removed in Mumbai this week. The number of excess teeth, or odontoma, he had reportedly set a new world record.

According to reports in Indian media, Ashik Gavai had been complaining about a severe toothache for 18 months. The toothache eventually led to a tumor-like swelling on his lower right jaw. The boy lives in a rural village in Buldhana district in the Amravati region with his family. His father feared that his tumor may have been cancerous, but as local dentists couldn’t give him a proper diagnosis, the worried parent brought Ashki to JJ Hospital in Mumbai.

There, Ashik was diagnosed with complex composite odontoma. Composite odontomas are benign tooth-like tumors that have both the enamel and dentin — the two major layers of the tooth — but are arranged in an abnormal pattern.

A team of dentists lead by the head of JJ Hospital’s dental unit, Sunanda Dhiware, performed a seven-hour operation on the teenager on July 22 and successfully removed 232 extra teeth from his mouth.

Dhiware told the BBC that, "At first, we couldn't cut [the odontoma] out so we had to use the basic chisel and hammer to take it out.” She added: “Once we opened it, little pearl-like teeth started coming out, one-by-one.”

The boy now has 28 teeth.
