A Utah elementary school teacher was rushed to hospital on Thursday after accidentally shooting herself in the leg while in a school bathroom.
Michelle Ferguson-Montgomery, a sixth-grade teacher at Westbrook Elementary School in Taylorsville was in the restroom just before 9:00 a.m. when her concealed-carry firearm somehow discharged.
Reports said that the bullet hit the toilet basin and shattered it, sending fragments into Montgomery’s lower leg.
No one else was in the restroom at the time of the incident, although reports said that other faculty members rushed to her aid after hearing the gunshot.
She was taken to a local hospital where she is described as being in ‘good condition.’
As yet there is no information as to how the gun managed to discharge, but an investigation has been launched.
The teacher was carrying a valid concealed-firearm permit.
Utah is one of the few states that allows concealed-carry weapons in public schools.
