On May 5th, the first female F-35 pilot began flight training at Florida’s Eglin Air Force Base.

On May 5th, the first female F-35 pilot accomplished her initial flight at Florida’s Eglin Air Force Base.

It was far from Lieutenant Coronel Christine Mau’s first time in the air, however.

Her prior experience includes flying combat missions in Afghanistan behind the controls of an F-15 Strike Eagle.

She also participated in 14 F-35 flight simulations as a means of getting better acquainted with her new ride.

Mau said that while virtual exercises were great preparation tools the experience just doesn’t compare to actually taking flight.

Though she was the first female to fly the F-35, she’s not the only one
