Charges Against Baltimore Police A Step Towards Justice, Activists Say

People in the streets of Baltimore have been celebrating the charges brought against six police officers in the April 12th homicide of Freddie Gray, as announced by City Prosecutor Marilyn Mosby on May 1st. In the city that had been occupied by the National Guard for more than a week, Gray’s murder has brought many people together, including rival gangs who have taken up demands for justice. Yet in a case that has returned police brutality and racial profiling to center stage, some residents hesitantly celebrate the official declarations, feeling that much more needs to be done. The charges show that the uprising has not been in vain, but now convictions are badly needed, they say. Protest marches continue in the city and in the country as a whole.
