Drama (1973) 180 minutes ~ Color

A two-part film, actually two concurrent stories, that reveals the dissolution of an 18-year marriage from two points of view. The stories are set in Rome, where the wealthy Martin and Jane Reynolds (Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor) meet by chance after a two-year separation. In the first of the two stories, Martin has returned to Rome on business, representing an African managerial firm. Martin remembers his marriage as a rather sado-masochistic union. Part two examines the marriage from Jane's point of view, focusing more on the Family life, on how the children have been scarred by the crumbling marriage.

Director: Waris Hussein

Writer: John Hopkins

Stars: Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Carrie Nye, Barry Foster, Gabriele Ferzetti

00:00Would you like some coffee?
00:02Would you like some wine, please?
00:12One of the usual places.
00:14Yes, I wasn't sure that you'd remember.
00:16Well, I'm here.
00:18How did you explain to...
00:20I'm sorry, I've forgotten his name.
00:22I didn't, I don't have to.
00:24I asked Joey to take me home.
00:26Then I decided I'd come up for a walk.
00:28What did you say to Diana?
00:30Nothing.
00:32What do you mean?
00:34Don't tell me she let you go without
00:36making at least one improper suggestion.
00:38She's always fancied you.
00:42You don't have to do this.
00:44No, I'm sorry.
00:46I'll go and get it.
00:48How's Peggy?
01:00She's fine.
01:02Can I see her
01:04tomorrow?
01:06Would she like to see her father?
01:08She doesn't want to see him.
01:10I'm sorry,
01:12but I think it's better
01:14that you should know.
01:16Yes.
01:18Why?
01:20She's angry.
01:24Can I talk to her?
01:26Write to her.
01:28She, uh,
01:30doesn't want to see you.
01:32She can't cope.
01:34She doesn't have to.
01:36Oh.
01:38Yes.
01:42Well, we always agreed that...
01:44in time...
01:46want to see you.
01:50Poor baby.
01:52It's nothing to do with me.
01:56What?
01:58It's nothing I've said.
02:00No, of course not.
02:02I want you to know.
02:08Yes, I do.
02:14I know.
02:28I think they're trying to give us
02:30the impression that they want us to leave.
02:32I want another drink.
02:36I'll get you one at the hotel.
02:44There you go, sir.
02:46Grazie.
02:48Where would you like to have your drink?
02:52Uh, in the bar, I think.
02:54Of course.
02:58I thought I...
03:00Well, I feel a bit stupid
03:02when you got the key.
03:04Reflex action.
03:06Get the key, check the messages.
03:10Um...
03:12You here alone?
03:14No, no, of course.
03:16I travel with an enormous entourage.
03:18Of course, I'm here alone.
03:20What do you mean?
03:22Good evening, Dino.
03:26Two brandies, please.
03:34Thank you, Dino.
03:38A.W.I. have asked the minister for talks.
03:40McIntyre?
03:42He's in Rome.
03:44I suppose he'll lead the discussions.
03:46Isn't that difficult for you?
03:48Why should it be difficult?
03:50Well, dealing with McIntyre.
03:52I was never that close to him.
03:56Well, you worked for A.W.I.
03:58better than half your life.
04:00And I left them two years ago.
04:02Sometimes I wonder.
04:04What do you want me to do?
04:06What do you expect me to do?
04:08Have interest and then leave?
04:12I have no interest in A.W.I.
04:14I'm not concerned with the increase
04:16in their gross annual product.
04:18I deal with them because I have to deal with them.
04:22The mines, the plant, the ships
04:24belong to them.
04:26The country does not.
04:28You mean you plan to liberate
04:30the mines, the plants, and the ships?
04:32Yes, if we have to.
04:34Are you serious?
04:36The labor force is 95% native.
04:38The management is 100% foreign.
04:40We'd like to redress
04:42the balance in our favor.
04:44Well, suppose
04:46A.W.I. refused and you take over?
04:48Oh, it's hardly likely.
04:50Yes, but
04:52if you do,
04:54can you run things day to day?
04:56I mean, isn't it
04:58a rather complicated process?
05:00No, with time
05:02and training, we can run the thing.
05:04What happens while they're training?
05:06Look, I don't want to sound negative.
05:08Well, there'll be snags, but
05:10we have the men.
05:12They simply haven't had the opportunity.
05:14And as long as A.W.I. retain control,
05:16they never will.
05:18Then you, the Africans,
05:20really want to take over.
05:22It would be easier.
05:24Negotiations are never satisfactory.
05:26They'll come to some sort of compromise settlement
05:28and there's no time for compromise.
05:34It's time I went home.
05:38You look altogether too attractive.
05:40Oh.
05:42Do you want another drink?
05:48All right, I'll take you one.
05:56Good night, Dina.
05:58Good night, Mr. Reynolds.
06:04Good night.
