Bob and Ziggy were over loved in their previous home. The former owners thought love met food, food, food. Now Bob, at 30 pounds, and Ziggy at 20 are tipping the scales. The brothers were left at the shelter and were nearing the red list when they were rescued by the Friends of Long Beach Animals and eventually found their happy home.

00:00Bob, okay, there's a lot to tell about Bob.
00:10I had lost my cat, Blackie, to a heart condition, and I was incredibly upset over it.
00:17And she was an obese kitty, and I always felt very guilty that I had let her down.
00:21Bob and Ziggy were being fostered at a pet grooming store that were being sponsored by
00:25Friends of Long Beach Animals.
00:27When I see Ziggy first off, and of course he's beautiful, but then I see Bob, he had
00:31his back to me, and I honestly could not tell if it was a dog or a cat that was in there.
00:36As I picked him up, he just melts into your arms as soon as you hold him, and I was thrilled
00:41to see that he needed a home.
00:43The girl at the store did tell me that nobody wanted to adopt Bob.
00:48Everyone fell in love with Ziggy first off, but they were coming as a package.
00:51And everyone felt that an obese cat would come along with a lot of problems.
00:56I fell in love with them instantly.
00:58It didn't deter me in any way.
01:01Their names are Bob and Ziggy, after Bob and Ziggy Marley, so that kind of gave me an inclination
01:05to who their owner was.
01:07Their owner was arrested on a drug charge.
01:09Neighbors called in that they had been abandoned at the place, and the shelter came in and
01:14brought them.
01:15Bob and his brother were at the shelter for two months, and they can't hold them because
01:24of space issues forever.
01:27So it came to a point, we had room to feature them in one of our adoption cages, and then
01:33some wonderful person came along and got Bob.
01:38If we would not have pulled them out to display them, they would have been scheduled for euthanasia.
01:46Bob is part Maine Coon.
01:48He has a partial M on his forehead.
01:50He has a slight curly hair on his tummy, not as much as his brother, Ziggy, but his
01:55size definitely gives away that he is part Maine Coon.
01:59Ziggy is a pretty average size.
02:01I think he weighs about 20 pounds.
02:04Bob is 30 pounds.
02:05He was 35 pounds when I did adopt him.
02:08I initially got him to lose five pounds very quickly.
02:11He put two pounds of that back on, and so now I'm trying to make sure that through exercise
02:16and I'm really watching his diet and doing everything I can possible to make sure he
02:21gets down to a healthy weight.
02:23What stands out about Bob mostly was very large and overweight, and a lot of people
02:31look at cats like that as probably going to end up with a lot of medical problems.
02:37I view his heaviness as his previous owner trying to show love to him, but unfortunately
02:41it does cause more of a stress to his bones and to his little body than it should.
02:48I do have to make sure I exercise him and make sure I get toys that he likes.
02:53He loves the feather toys and any toys that act like a bird or a mouse.
02:57He goes crazy for those.
02:58As soon as people see him and they see his size, they automatically assume he has a thyroid
03:02issue or that he has diabetes, which right away to them means more vet bills.
03:07He does not have a thyroid issue.
03:08He does not have diabetes.
03:10This is just how he came to me.
03:13Unfortunately through an improper diet is how he got this way, and we're trying to fix
03:17that for him.
03:18Our goal of the organization is zero euthanasia of any healthy pet, and hopefully we're going
03:27to see that in our lifetime.
03:29They aren't just all a bunch of worthless animals.
03:32All those animals came from somewhere and needed a home.
03:37There are no downsides to having a larger breed cat versus a smaller breed.
03:41They're incredibly calm.
03:43They love family.
03:44They're really good family cats.
03:46The shelters are full of them for some reason.
03:48I think maybe because of their size.
03:50They don't shed nearly as much as my other short-haired cats do.
03:54They're just really good family cats.
03:57They are very affectionate, incredibly vocal, which is nice.
04:00They have a different meow than most breeds, but they're just great cats to have.
04:05I do make sure I give him more time and more attention.
04:09He's ready for love 24-7.
