JJ was a winning racer when he was cut down in his prime. He started bleeding into his leg and would have died if GreySave had not brought him to the attention of good doctors. His leg was removed but being a three-legged Greyhound hasn't stopped JJ from getting where he needs to go. Now, he's found his way into the heart and home of his dad, Jerome.

00:11 I saw JJ's story on the GraySave website.
00:16 And I got Kathy's phone number and gave her a call
00:18 and told her I would be interested in taking JJ home
00:21 with me.
00:22 His story just called out to me and said, I want to come home.
00:27 So I met Kathy at the vet's office.
00:29 And JJ came home with me that afternoon.
00:32 And now JJ is in his forever home.
00:35 He came to us when the kennel operator in Tucson
00:39 called and said, I came into work this morning.
00:42 And one of our dogs that ran last night
00:44 is bleeding into his leg.
00:45 I've taken him to the track vet.
00:47 And they said, just put him down.
00:49 And he said, but I can't do that.
00:50 I went to Tucson.
00:51 And as soon as I saw him, I knew we were in trouble.
00:54 His leg was probably twice the size
00:57 of a normal track dog leg.
00:59 They were afraid to open him up because they
01:01 knew there was a bleeder in there.
01:03 And they thought he'd bleed to death on the table.
01:05 So they removed his leg.
01:07 It took a four-hour surgery.
01:09 They actually moved up into his hip.
01:11 And the bleeder was below that.
01:14 But within eight hours of surgery,
01:17 that dog was up on three legs and starting to heal.
01:21 All about the same time, a volunteer
01:23 showed up who said that they only fostered--
01:26 they fostered and adopted special needs greyhounds.
01:30 That's good.
01:31 So that's how JJ found his home.
01:36 I encourage people to adopt special needs greyhounds
01:40 and special needs dogs.
01:42 You've never been loved until you've been
01:44 loved by a special needs dog.
01:47 You've done something special for them.
01:48 You've taken them into their home
01:50 when other people have rejected them,
01:52 when other people have been mean to them,
01:54 when other people have hurt them.
01:56 They know when they come into that house that they're special.
02:01 JJ is a lover.
02:03 He loves being around people.
02:04 He loves being around other dogs.
02:06 He loves to play with his toys.
02:08 He loves to eat.
02:10 He is just happy to be alive.
02:12 He is not a quitter.
02:13 He wants to go for it, go and get it.
02:15 And he wants to be a pet.
02:17 He wants to be happy.
02:18 JJ has no idea that he has only three legs.
02:21 To him, he is just walking around like a normal dog.
02:24 Once in a while, he'll get away from me out in the backyard,
02:27 and he'll start running.
02:29 And I have to slow him down, because we don't want him
02:31 to fall or tear anything loose.
02:32 Even with a muzzle on, he can reach around and get
02:35 to the wound.
02:36 So I've been sleeping with him just
02:38 to make sure that that doesn't happen, because we
02:41 do not need it reinjured.
02:42 We've made a lot of progress.
02:44 He's getting healthier by the day.
02:46 He's getting stronger, and he's gaining weight every day.
02:49 I am hoping JJ spends another 10 years with us,
02:52 because he'll be 14.
02:53 And that's a good age.
02:54 That's a good age for a greyhound.
02:56 If Kathy and Gracie had not gone to the track
02:59 and picked JJ up, that dog would be dead now.
03:02 There was no hope for him.
03:04 Now he's got nothing but hope.
03:07 Now he's got a good life ahead of him.
