00:00Your pig's health starts with good nutrition.
00:13What's a well-balanced meal for your pig and how much should they eat?
00:16There's no formula for how much you should feed your pig.
00:18It depends on your pig's activity level and condition.
00:21A well-balanced diet for your pig should consist of potbelly pig chow, low carbs, high fiber,
00:28minimal sugar, and lots of dark leafy greens.
00:32Do not feed your pig dog or cat food because it's too high in protein, fat, and sodium.
00:41For a healthy snack, I toss out handfuls of air-popped popcorn or healthy cereals for
00:46some grazing time and also to keep them in shape.
00:52Is your pig fat?
00:54Here's how to know.
00:55If they have rolls over their eyes, if they have trouble walking, or their belly touches
00:59the ground, those are all visual indicators that your pig is overweight.
01:03A good size for a full-grown, mature potbelly pig should be between 90 and 170 pounds.
01:12What kinds of foods are no-nos for pigs?
01:14If a human shouldn't be eating it, maybe a pig shouldn't either.
01:18Anything high in salt, anything high in fat, anything high in protein, and also caffeine
01:23and chocolate.
01:25Those are all things that should be avoided for a pig.
01:30Pigs live to be between 15 and 20 years old.
01:33However, if you try to force your pig to stay small by withholding the proper amount of
01:37food, it could die from malnutrition at five years old or even earlier.
01:41This happens because their organs continue to grow while their skeletal structure is
01:45forced to stay small.
01:49Pigs should always be spayed and neutered.
01:52One pig could have between 12 and 30 pigs per year, and those pigs could start reproducing
01:57as early as four months of age.
01:59Pretty soon, two adorable pigs could lead to 100 piglets in one year.
02:03Female pigs, if not spayed, are prone to uterine tumors.
02:07Unneutered males can become aggressive and are prone to testicular cancer.
02:13The most common health problem with pigs is obesity and the uterine tumors in the unspayed
02:19females.
02:20Obesity itself can lead to many health problems, including heart failure, kidney failure, inability
02:26to walk, and arthritis.
