Lacey is Greta's patrol horse for the past 13 years. She is wonderful with people, kids, and crowd. However, she becomes a different horse when she sees the saddle.

00:00I'm Greta Hitzman, and my horse's name is Lacey.
00:07I got Lacey about 12 years ago.
00:09A friend of mine bought her from an auction because, you know, I was in the market for
00:12a paint horse around 10 years old, and that's just what he found.
00:15And he's lucky that I like her, because I'm very picky.
00:18I use Lacey on patrol for a local police department, crowd control, parade, parking lot.
00:24And so she's out in the public, she's good with kids, excellent with animals.
00:28Lacey has issues with saddling.
00:32I mean, this is a battle, it's like...
00:40They learn respect.
00:41In our training, you have your space, and they learn not to invade it.
00:44And when that saddle comes out, all that goes right out the window.
00:47She'll plow me down, and not think twice.
00:49Because once the saddle on her isn't the issue, it's the saddle, as soon as she sees it, totally
00:53different animal.
00:54And if I showed somebody, this is a horse that does police work out there, they'd say,
00:59Because she, it's just crazy.
01:00I've tried changing saddles, changing pads, letting her smell it, and rubbing it on her,
01:06doing it slow, from the other side.
01:08I mean, I've absolutely tried everything.
01:11So the only thing that works is covering her eyes, or food.
01:14Voila!
01:15I would imagine when they broke her, whatever, however they did it, ruined her.
01:26If anybody else tried to saddle her, and they're not aware of what happens, I mean, she would
01:31hurt them.
01:32If she were easy to saddle, it would be better for everybody involved.
01:34I mean, people could use her when I'm not using her for deployments, and, you know what
01:38I mean?
01:39She would have a busy life, a happy life.
01:42If it doesn't get remedied, I can't see her being placed, really, anywhere.
01:46And if it gets remedied, she would be exposed to kids that could ride her, because she's
01:51awesome.
01:52Once you're on her back, she's easy to ride.
01:53She's very well-trained.
01:54But that one issue keeps her from being in other people's lives.
01:58I hope the communicator can tell me why she's got these issues, like what was done, and
02:03what we can do to undo it.
02:04If Lacey were to get over this, she would get out more.
02:08She'd be a happier horse.
