00:08 Hello.
00:09 I'm a West Highland White Terrier, also known as a Westie.
00:14 Although I'm small and love being around people,
00:17 I'm not a lap dog.
00:19 We typically have a type A personality.
00:21 We tend to be rowdy, tenacious, feisty, independent, yet
00:26 friendly with an appetite for adventure.
00:28 I'm terrific for families, but need
00:30 to be looked after around children due to my small size.
00:33 We are considered one of the most affectionate
00:36 of all the terriers, but do possess
00:38 a demanding personality.
00:40 We were bred in Scotland to be small game hunters
00:42 and keep vermin under control around homes, farms, mills,
00:46 and coal mines.
00:47 We have specially developed tails
00:49 that allow us to be pulled out of small holes
00:51 without hurting us.
00:52 We tend to live about 12 to 15 years
00:54 and stand between 10 to 12 inches,
00:56 weighing anywhere from 13 to 22 pounds.
01:00 Overall, we're considered a healthy breed,
01:02 but we do have a couple of issues you should be aware of.
01:05 We have a predisposition to abdominal hernias,
01:07 and Westies under one year old can
01:09 have a disease commonly referred to as lion jaw or Westie jaw
01:13 that can cause problems chewing or swallowing food.
01:17 Due to our fiercely independent personalities,
01:20 we can be difficult to train, and it
01:22 is recommended to start our training when we're puppies.
01:25 I can do well in just about any environment,
01:28 and I'm very active indoors and outdoors,
01:30 requiring long periods of playtime each day.
01:34 I really want to live in the best home possible,
01:37 so let's recap.
01:38 I'm a rowdy, independent, but friendly breed
01:42 that's great for families.
01:43 I originate from Scotland.
01:45 I will live about 12 to 15 years, and I'm a healthy breed.
01:49 Training me can be difficult, so start as early as possible.
01:53 And remember, I can live in just about any environment,
01:56 as long as I get long periods of play every day.
01:59 Cheerio.
