These unweaned kittens came into the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center a few days ago. They were found on the street and without the mom. They are still too young and need to be bottled fed by a foster. An alarming fact about unweaned kittens is that if they are found without mom and there is no foster to take care of them, often kittens are euthanatized. Please contact animal care.lacounty.gov if you can foster kittens.

00:00Last night, our officer went to a call.
00:09She responded to a call of unweaned kittens.
00:11She's brought them in, hoping we can find somebody.
00:14There's five gray tabbies.
00:16No more than maybe about six weeks of age, there was just no mom to be found.
00:19They were apparently strays.
00:20A kitten needs to be with mom at least about nine weeks to get their immunity from their
00:24mom and just to get their immune system built up.
00:28They're too small.
00:30They're skinny.
00:31They need to still be nursing for another good three weeks off of their mother.
00:35They're really sweet.
00:36They're really scared too at the same time.
00:37They all stay cuddled together in their little ball, but once you hold them, they purr.
00:41They're eating, but we need to keep them that way, so out they go is what we need.
00:46I do believe they do have a good chance of surviving, but in a home, not here.
00:51Spread of disease happens really quickly.
00:53We get ferals that come in that could be carrying something that they may not show symptoms
00:57of but can pass it on through sneezing, so that's why it's urgent that when they come
01:03in, they go right back out.
01:05Kitten season is really overwhelming.
01:07We get kittens without moms because people don't know how to leave that litter there
01:10for mom to come get.
01:12So we can get over dozens in a day, and unfortunately, we can't keep them unless we know we have
01:18a bottle feed rescue that's going to take them, which is very, very rare.
01:22With kittens, you have to make sure you maintain the body temperature.
01:25They have to have a warm section and a cold section.
01:27You've got to completely maintain that.
01:30They need antibodies from mom.
01:31If we have unweaned kittens come in, we keep them only for a few hours.
01:34We can't keep them any longer because we don't know if mom's going to come in.
01:38We don't know where mom is at, so the humane thing to do is to put them to sleep.
01:45Trying to get enough volunteers that are willing to take on the task of fostering these kittens,
01:51taking them home, and bottle feeding them.
01:55If you do want to foster, we suggest that you fill out the volunteer application.
01:59Fill it out, go through our training, and you're more than welcome to help us save lives.
02:03Our five cats are timid.
02:05They're shy, but once you hold them, they purr.
02:08They're friendly.
02:09They want to cuddle.
02:11They want to crawl into the shirts to stay warm.
02:16They would do really well.
02:17They would do really well together, or even separate if we could find maybe one to take
02:20three and someone to take two, they would do perfectly fine.
02:24Someone who's willing to put in the time and effort would make a great foster, to make
02:28that cat friendly, playful.
02:30When you take care of a cat, you want to make sure they exercise and everything.
02:33You can even walk a cat.
02:34Keep them stimulated to play, to hunt.
02:37There's plenty of toys.
02:38Someone who's willing to put in that time and effort for them.
