00:00Hi, my name is Dr. Campbell and today we're going to talk about a really gross and disgusting
00:05habit, eating poop.
00:18We are starting off this excellent topic with a question from Dawn P. She says, my aunt
00:24has a dog named Gordita and Gordita has been eating her poop her whole life.
00:29Why does she do this and how can I make her stop?
00:32Eating poop, although it's a horrible habit, doesn't generally cause any harm to the dog.
00:38Let's talk a little bit about the history so we can understand how to fix the problem.
00:42When dogs have their puppies, they tend to clean up after their pups by licking and eating
00:48poop.
00:49For most moms, this ends really soon after puppies and kittens are weaned.
00:54But some dogs carry this into their adult life.
00:58Now let's talk about why some dogs do it.
01:00Here are some triggers.
01:02One, physical pain.
01:04Two, parasites.
01:07Three, lack of a proper diet.
01:10Four, behavior, anxiety and boredom.
01:14What can I do to stop this horrible habit?
01:17Well, the first thing is very simple.
01:20Clean up.
01:21As soon as your pet goes to the bathroom, make sure you clean it up promptly.
01:25Two, food additives.
01:28There's one particular food additive called Coprobam.
01:31There's another one called Forbid.
01:33These you simply put in the food and it makes the poop taste really yucky.
01:38And then last is what I like to call bait and switch.
01:42If you see your pet go to the bathroom and they show interest in it, just call them over
01:46and give them a treat.
01:47Now you're encouraging them to come over to you and you're at least telling them, don't
01:52go after the poop.
01:53That's gross.
01:54Do you have any questions you'd like me to answer?
01:57Just submit your questions in the comments section below.
02:00We'll see you next time.
