Parrots are emotionally sensitive and need a lot of interaction with their flock AKA humans and fellow parrots.

In addition, they need lots of playtime that includes foraging.

00:00Health and your parrot. My name is Rose Levine. I am the founder of Parrots First and I have
00:10a passion for parrots. How long does a parrot live? Depending on the type of parrot, your
00:15parrot could live anywhere from six years on up to 90. A parrot that can live 90 years
00:21is going to have more than one home. Oftentimes people will put a parrot in their will so
00:26that the bird will be passed on to a sanctuary or a rescue or family member with money to
00:32support the bird. What are some of the common health problems of parrots? Overall, parrots
00:37are healthy physically. Emotionally, a lot of times they develop problems. These can
00:43be manifested by feather picking, mutilating or screaming, caused by lack of attention,
00:48improper cage size and lack of interaction with humans and other birds. Can parrots that
00:55have been emotionally damaged recover? Yes, they can. With time and patience, most birds
01:00will recover from trauma or from neglect. One of the most common emotional problems
01:05is a fear of humans, especially of hands. I suggest to people that they be only the
01:11treat giver. As they walk by the cage, they may drop a treat in the bowl over and over
01:16for days at a time until the parrot perceives them as nothing more than a good food bringer.
01:22Parrots require a lot of your time in preparing their food, preparing their cage and spending
01:27one-on-one time with them. How do I groom my parrot? Unless you have been trained to
01:32do it yourself, grooming of your parrot should be done by an avian veterinarian or an avian
01:37groomer. Do I need to spay or neuter my parrot? The answer to that is no. Spaying or neutering
01:43is not necessary. Unless there is a medical issue, your veterinarian will decide. Does
01:48my parrot need a companion? Parrots are very social. They do best when they have a companion.
01:54Often two males or two females will bond and become the best of friends.
02:18Thank you for watching!
