You don't need to live in Japan to create the perfect environment for your Koi.

Koi's can live for over two hundred years so making the perfect habitat is important to its longevity.

Koi's need a sizable pond, proper pumps, aeration and a balanced water chemistry.

How many Koi's can you have in your pond?

What kind of temperatures can Koi's live in?

00:00 A koi's natural environment is really a river or a muddy pond because koi like to forage
00:10 all day if they can eat.
00:11 That's what they live for, seeking a worm, seeking a piece of crustacean, anything.
00:18 We on the other hand put them in pristine ponds and it's not really a natural environment
00:25 for the fish but they're happy because we feed them.
00:28 They don't have to work for their food.
00:30 What kind of environment is right for koi in a home?
00:33 The best environment for a koi is a pond.
00:36 Ponds come in every size.
00:39 My advice is try not to build something under a thousand gallons.
00:42 Ideally 2,500 gallons and up.
00:47 There are ponds made out of fiberglass, rubber liners, and my preference is a concrete pond.
00:53 The reason I like concrete is that the alkalinity leaches out and as it's leaching out it supports
01:00 my pH.
01:01 pH in your water chemistry is very important because it's all part of keeping your balance
01:07 and keeping your bacteria and the microorganisms and everything happy and thriving.
01:13 The depth of the pond is very important.
01:16 At deeper depths, fish can get away from extreme cold, fish can get away from extreme heat,
01:23 and believe it or not, they also will sunburn.
01:27 They can get away from the ultraviolets if they are past two, two and a half feet.
01:32 And the deeper the better.
01:34 Some ponds will go to 16 feet.
01:36 They're like swimming pools and the fish grow to be very, very large.
01:40 The key also is to provide oxygenation, which can be through pumps, through waterfalls,
01:47 and filters.
01:48 We generally prefer filters that are outside of the pond because they're simply easier
01:53 to maintain and it allows the fish more room to swim.
01:59 Know your local water quality.
02:01 It is really worth analyzing it or talking to your local water company.
02:06 The fish have no escaping it and if it's not right from the get-go, you're going to have
02:11 a lot of issues balancing it out.
02:13 So water is it.
02:15 The air we breathe is precious.
02:17 The water they live in is their life.
02:21 Do not exceed 10 to 12 fish.
02:23 Let them grow because they will grow according to available space and you will have 12 beautiful
02:30 fish.
