Feeding a Koi is all about moderation; try not to overfeed them. They need a pelleted food high in protein and low in carbohydrates. Supplement with vegetables, fruits and even treat them to shrimp. Watch the video to find out how often to feed and how much.

00:00How to feed your koi a balanced and healthy diet. Like any creature, koi have to have a
00:07diet designed for them. And commercially you can find pelleted food, which is available in fish
00:14stores and petco's and those types of stores. But it's generally not sufficient and I'd rather
00:19that you supplement their food with vegetables such as green spinach or steamed carrots and peas.
00:26Don't overfeed, that is absolutely the rule. Rather have a slender fish than a fat fish which
00:35could cause some other issues. So the key is to monitor how much each fish is getting. They do
00:41not have a stomach, it's only an intestine, so they do not get the message that they're full.
00:45Foods that aren't good for koi are foods that are high in carbohydrates with high contents of wheat
00:53and corn. And the problem with those foods is that it creates too much fat in the fish and
00:59especially in females it can cause them to have issues with their egg production and especially
01:06egg evacuation. Foods to avoid are sharp foods such as raw apples, raw carrots, anything that
01:16is hard because the problem is yes the fish can take it in, grind it. Koi have teeth but it could
01:24tear their intestine and that might not be something that can be fixed. Koi can taste and
01:31smell food and they're very finicky so of course if a food has shrimp in it the fish will go crazy.
01:37You can treat your fish to shrimp on occasion but that is very high in protein and again everything
01:44has to be balanced so you don't want to exceed in any area so a little bit maybe once or twice a
01:50week in summertime and everything in moderation because with fish anything you do today has a
01:57consequence tomorrow.
