Chance has slowly made his way into a large number of videos on the Pet Collective. As his fan base grows, more and more people have asked "what kind of dig is he?" and since Chance was a stray dog when i found him, I've never known. In this story, we learn about Doggie DNA tests as I take chance to finally get his exam.

00:00I've always thought of my dog Chance as special.
00:03He loves being on camera, he takes direction well, and always manages to give the perfect
00:08shot.
00:09You might even say he's a bit of a ham.
00:10And it's no surprise because I found Chance from behind the lens of a camera.
00:14He was a lost dog who wandered onto the set of a movie I was shooting.
00:17Oh, I'm scared.
00:18Oh, I'm puppy.
00:19You're ruining the shot.
00:20Hello.
00:21Hi.
00:22Are you Union?
00:23Are you Union?
00:24When he started showing up in the videos on the Pet Collective, a lot of people started
00:28asking what kind of dog he is, and since he was a lost dog when I found him, I've never
00:32known.
00:33I started to wonder if there might be some benefits to learning what kind of dog he is,
00:36so I could learn a little more about where he came from and know my dog a little better.
00:41I headed to the Moore Park Veterinary Hospital for a DNA test to put the question to bed
00:45once and for all.
00:46You want this one?
00:47Sit.
00:48I think that's the main thing what this DNA test does is it just gives people peace of
00:52mind exactly what their mixed breed dog is.
00:55It can let you know if the dog is predisposed to any health issues down the road.
00:59It can help the veterinarian know if you say, my dog is this mix, this mix.
01:03It can give them a heads up, hey, this dog's predisposed to these diseases down the road
01:07as they get older.
01:09A lot of people ask, what is your dog?
01:11They can say, this is exactly what my dog is.
01:12Okay.
01:13And then we're going to go into the exam room, and this is where we're going to pull the
01:17blood.
01:18It can predict your dog's likely adult weight.
01:20It prescreens for breed-related risks of genetic diseases.
01:24And then two, it kind of helps the veterinarian know too, information so you guys can create
01:31wellness programs.
01:32If the doctor knows, hey, your dog might be at risk for thyroid disease, you guys can
01:36start screening early and maybe catch it early.
01:38There's 235 breeds and types and varieties that this checks.
01:42I know in the past there were ones with cheek swabs, but I don't think they were as accurate.
01:48So this one is done with a blood test.
01:52You know, our big goal is, since a lot of these dogs are like family to a lot of the
01:56people that own them, it's basically getting this test so we know what their genetic breed
02:01is and we can help them live long, happy lives.
02:04What would you guess before I tell you anything that people have said about it?
02:09Mine, I would say Collie and maybe Shepherd.
02:16That's exactly what I would guess.
02:20So off we go.
02:21So what they do is they give you a printout of what your dog is with the breeds of dogs
02:27on it, kind of like a genetic chain.
02:30And then it'll tell you it's mixed with this percentage and this percentage versus this
02:33percentage.
02:34Nice to meet you.
02:35Nice to meet you.
02:36Thank you so much.
02:37This is Chance.
02:38Hi.
02:39How are you?
02:40So it's Chance's big day today and he gets to find out who he is.
02:48He showed that he is a Collie mix, but he's actually mixed with this unique little guy
02:54called a German Spitz.
02:55It's a pretty rare little breed.
02:59So he has a little bit, about a little less than 20% of a dog called a Polish lowland
03:06sheep dog.
03:08He has no Shepherd in him?
03:09There is absolutely no German Shepherd in him.
03:12Oh my God.
03:13I know.
03:14Slow it down.
03:17The test results were shocking.
03:18I had always seen my dog as being part of the Shepherd family, so I was surprised to
03:22learn he wasn't even part Shepherd.
03:24The doctor went on to explain that Chance's parents were a mixed breed Collie mix who
03:28was mostly sheep dog and a purebred German Spitz.
03:31She told me that his personality matches his combination perfectly.
03:35He's loyal like a Collie, but independent like a Spitz.
03:38What she told me next really surprised me.
03:40The cool thing about the company that does this genetic testing is it tells us their
03:45breed, but it also medically makes a difference because Collies specifically are actually
03:51predisposed to certain genetic problems.
03:54Oh really?
03:55So what they've done for Chance is they've gone ahead and screened him for some of those
03:58tests and there actually was something that turned positive that we need to talk about
04:03today.
04:04They checked him for this drug sensitivity, this is a printout from the university that
04:10does that specific genetic test, and it goes through and talks about all the different
04:15medications that Chance should try to avoid, and so that's really important for his veterinarian
04:21to know that he tested.
04:22Erythromycin?
04:23Yeah.
04:24So there's some pretty common medications that we would use for treating an infection,
04:31for treating mites, so while satisfying our curiosity, medically it makes a huge difference
04:36for Chance that we've run this test.
04:38Now that I know more about who my dog is, I know more about keeping him safe and alive
04:42for as long as possible.
04:44I've always thought of Chance as a great dog.
04:46Now I know a little more about where that greatness comes from.
