00:00Hey guys, I'm a bloodhound.
00:10You smell fantastic, by the way.
00:12We bloodhounds are very affectionate and gentle.
00:15However, we can be difficult to obedience train due to the fact that we follow our nose
00:21and we don't care what you say when we're tracking a scent.
00:25We've been known to follow a scent for up to 130 miles and track a scent that's over
00:30300 hours old.
00:32That's 12 and a half days.
00:35That's like an eternity in dog years.
00:37Although our exact origins are not entirely known, bloodhounds were definitely established
00:42in Europe when William the Conqueror took the crown in England roughly 1,000 years ago.
00:47We were bred to be hunting companions, sniffing out wild deer and boar.
00:52Although we aren't used for hunting purposes like we used to be, we are very useful for
00:56law enforcement.
00:58We've been used by the police to track down bad guys for hundreds of years.
01:03Bloodhounds live 8 to 12 years on average.
01:05We're a medium-sized dog standing between 23 and 25 inches tall and weighing anywhere
01:11between 80 and 120 pounds.
01:14Bloodhounds are susceptible to a high rate of gastrointestinal ailments.
01:18Food is the most common stomach ailment and is the leading cause of death among bloodhounds.
01:23To combat this, make sure you feed me an hour before or after exercise from an elevated
01:29bowl.
01:30We're very well known for our long, droopy skin on our face and soft, droopy ears.
01:35These actually help us with our sense of smell by trapping scent particles and then funneling
01:40them into our wide nostrils.
01:42It's pretty cool, right?
01:44Obedience training isn't the easiest thing to do with us.
01:47We just love to smell stuff and our strong-willed desire to sniff things makes us too preoccupied
01:52to pay attention.
01:53Just remember, when you're training us, we try to take charge, so you need to be kind
01:57but also the undisputed boss of the house.
02:00We're a good family dog and love children.
02:03Sometimes we can get carried away and knock kids over and this is just because of our
02:07size.
02:08We don't mean any harm.
02:10Being the gentle giant that I am, I make a pretty good apartment dog as long as you take
02:15me out for daily walks and let me sniff around.
02:18If left to my own devices, I tend to get bored and destructive.
02:21So keep me entertained if you want to keep that new couch.
02:25What I would prefer is a house with a yard so I can entertain myself.
02:29Just remember, bloodhounds tend to overheat easily due to our thick coats.
02:33So let's review.
02:35Bloodhounds are very affectionate, gentle giants.
02:38We have a tendency to be strong-willed and will not listen to you when there's a scent
02:41to sniff out.
02:43We've been used by law enforcement for centuries to track down criminals because of our great
02:47sense of smell.
02:48We can live a fairly long time if you keep an eye out for our stomach issues.
02:53We can be difficult to train, but just make sure you take charge and show me who's boss.
02:58I'm happy in most living situations as long as you take me out for daily walks.
03:03Speaking of which, let's go outside and smell the roses.
